Jan Stradtmann takes a subtle approach to depictthe onset of the global economic crisis by choosing almost arcane imagery for his series Garden of Eden. Shot secretly on Canary Wharf (London’s financial district) in September and October 2008, the photos manage to reflect the tense atmosphere of that particular time in what appear to be everyday situations such as a cigarette break, a phone conversation, or an intimate talk in the park. Even though none of these scenes offer a direct link to the crash, some kind of clandestine action is suggested by their staging.
